Muungano Makonde Carvings and Handicrafts
is a community-based organisation of over fifty extraordinarily talented local
artists who create and sell traditional African wood carvings, paintings, textiles,
jewellery and other handicrafts. The cooperative (muungano = union) was formed
in 1987 by craftsmen from the tribe of the Makonde (originally from Southern Tanzania)
who are well-known for their extraordinary skills in producing ebony wood carvings.
Today, artists of more than ten tribes are working at the cooperative together.
Most
goods are directly handcrafted by the artists on site.By
purchasing art objects and souvenirs from the cooperative, buyers not only avoid
marked-up prices from middlemen, but directly support the artists and their families
and thus contribute to fair trade in Tanzania.
A training
centre is currently being set up in a new banda where art education and training
will be provided to young local artists.
In addition,
the cooperative supports local environmental projects which aim at the conservation
and reforestation of endangered Ebony trees in the Kilimanjaro region.
